THE CLASS OF 2012

LANDRY KENDRICK
Landry Kendrick

Bass 3 my freshman year in 2008 and Bass Line Captain on bass 1 in 2009, 2010, 2011 during marching season, and Symphonic Band Percussionist during concert season all 4 years of high school.

Awards Earned: All Region Band 2010, 2011, 2012, Area 2012, Leadership Team 2010 - 2012

Biography: I played bass 3 my freshman year and bass 1 my sophomore, junior, and senior years and was in Symphonic band all 4 years of high school. I participated in solo and ensemble and the State Solo and Ensemble contest all four years of high school. My favorite band experience was finally making ZIA finals in my senior year after coming so close in 2008 and 2010, making it feel like all of our hard work had finally payed off. I'm so glad to have been a part of the soaring pride band and it definitely introduced me to my love for music, which I will continue pursuing at West Texas A&M University where I plan to get my bachelors degree in Music Education so I can inspire kids the way my directors inspired me. I also hope to audition and participate in a Drum Corps the next three years to become a better person and musician.

Mr.Kendrick will be continuing his musical career at Texas A&M University studying music education.

KATELYN HUCKABY
Katelyn HuckabyKatelyn HuckabyKatelyn Huckaby

Percussion/Bassoon, Section Leadership Team, Symphonic Band 2011-2012 & 2010-2011, Amarillo Youth Symphony 2011-2012.

Awards Earned: All-Region (2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007) Area (2010)

Biography: During her time in the Soaring Pride Band, Katelyn has made All-Region every year she could, which totals up to be six years; she also made it to Area once. Katelyn was a two year member of the Symphonic Band (her junior and senior year), as well as a one year member of the Amarillo Youth Symphony (her senior year).

All four years of marching season she was a member of the front ensemble; first playing bells and chimes, then moving up to marimba for the next three years. Katelyn was a member of the Leadership Team, on the social committee, and the front ensemble’s section leader both her junior and senior year.

Katelyn’s favorite band experiences were the travel opportunities she got to take: traveling and competing in both Orlando, FL and New York, NY. If it weren’t for band she would not have gotten to fly on an airplane, visit the “happiest place on earth”, get to visit the site of the World Trade Center, and stand outside the theater where the filming of the David Letterman Show takes place. She feels a little more cultured now that she’s seen a little piece of the world.

She would also like to thank the directors for always pushing her to do her best and to not give up on herself when things got tough. It is because of their wonderful teaching and guidance that she will be pursuing a career in music.

Miss Huckaby will be continuing her musical career at West Texas A&M University studying music education.

Awards Earned: All Region 2003 and 2004, State Solo and Ensemble 2004

Biography: Mr. Sheffield's first year of teaching in Canyon was her freshman year. Her favorite band trip was to Winter Park, CO her freshman year. Her all time favorite memories from band are winning 3rd at the State Marching Competition in 2002 her junior year, and Mr. S backing her in between the instrument shelves with "the gut" in the "Old High School" band hall.

After high school she attended WTAMU from 2004-2006, where she was also in band. Her plan, at the time, was to become a Special Education Teacher. She married Jonathan Castillo (Amarillo High School 2000) in June of 2006. In 2008 and 2009 she attended Amarillo College with the hopes of becoming a RN. In December 2008 she learned that there would soon be an addition to her little family. Her son, Jacob, was born in August 2009. She was a stay at home mom until October 2010, when she started cosmetology school at Exposito School of Hair Design. She graduated in November 2011, and received her license in January 2012. THE CLASS OF 1977

DAVID GREEN
David Green

Years in band: 1973-1977 Instrument: Trombone

Awards Earned: John Phillip Sousa Award (13 May 1977), Solo & Ensemble (UIL and Greater Southwest Music Festival, 1972-1977): 16 first division ratings, of which 5 were for trombone solo, All-Region Band (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977), All-Area (1976)

Biography: I was 4th chair trombone during my sophomore year and was first chair during my junior and senior years (with the exception of one week in the spring of 1977 when John Guidry (class of 1979) briefly usurped my position. I won it back, of course).
I was lead trombone in the musical orchestra for the CHS productions of "Oliver!" (1975); "Hello, Dolly!" (1976); and "Carousel" (1977)
I was lead trombone in the Stage Band during my sophomore and junior years.
I was also a member of the Loading Crew during my senior year (which in those days involved riding on a rather well-worn yellow bus in which the last 12 rows of seats had been removed in order to accommodate the instruments)

Probably the most memorable event during my time in the Eagle Band was the Canyon-Levelland game on 12 November 1976. We had practiced a combined halftime show with the CJHS Symphonic Band in which we would do a scatter drill and then assemble to spell out "C A N Y O N". In addition to that, the stadium lights would be turned off and we would all pull out flashlights. That was the plan, anyway. Unfortunately, Mother Nature dumped about 6 inches of snow on us during the first half of the game. By halftime, many of our instruments were frozen and the football field was snowy mess. Needless to say, the halftime performance was cancelled.

On a warm June night, a musical trio consisting of myself, John Guidry (trombone, Class of 1979) and Stan Chapman (tuba, Class of 1978) decided to serenade the folks in Hunsley Hills with some jazz improvisation. (Tony Daskevich came along for the ride.) Our musical outing was a smashing success, at least to the extent that no one called law enforcement to complain (or if they did, we had left the premises prior to the arrival of the cops).
